Who We Are
We are the Youth and Agroecology Working Group (YAWG) of the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA). We are a group of young leaders from across Africa. We work together to change how food is grown, shared, and valued on our continent.
Our members come from many countries, including Uganda, Zambia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Tunisia, Kenya, Benin, Togo, Zimbabwe, and Nigeria — and the group keeps growing.
Two important ideas at the heart of our work
Agroecology means growing food in a way that works with nature, not against it. It uses local knowledge, local seeds, and healthy soil. It cares for people, communities, and the environment at the same time.
Food Sovereignty means that people have the right to decide about their own food. Communities — not big companies or foreign markets — should choose what they grow, what they eat, and how their food systems work.

Youth-led movements and initiatives on agroecology and food sovereignty actively shaping practice and policy across Africa.
The YAWG works towards achieving a cohesive movement of African youth fully aware and engaged in advocating for and practicing Agroecology as a viable and African led solution to Africa’s most pressing crises including but not limited to unemployment, food and health crises, biodiversity loss and climate changeIn simple words: we want young people to lead the change — on farms, in communities, and in the rooms where decisions are made.

To enable and strengthen youth involvement in advancing agroecology and food sovereignty through meaningful leadership, participation, advocacy and action.
